Toyota Brand to Sell Electric Heavy-Duty Trucks

The Hexagon-Hino Distribution Agreement

Hexagon Purus, a developer of mobility solutions for both hydrogen fuel and battery-electric systems, has signed a distribution agreement with Hino Motors’ U.S. division.

Under the pact, Hexagon will manufacture up to 10,000 heavy trucks by 2030, which will be distributed through qualifying Hino dealerships in the U.S.

Deal Could Be Worth $2 Billion

Hexagon officials said the vehicles would be based on the Toyota brand’s truck chassis, then upgraded with Hexagon zero-emission systems, including batteries, power and auxiliary modules, and software.

The new agreement replaces a 2022 deal for battery packs between the two companies. It could be worth $2 billion over the course of its lifetime, officials estimated.

Production to Begin in 2024

Production of the new trucks is slated to begin late this year. During the agreement, Hino will be responsible for service on the vehicles.

Hexagon emphasized the trucks would comply with new, stricter limits on new truck emissions in California, which take effect this year.
