Renault Opens New Design Centre in Chennai, Reinforcing Commitment to Indian Market
Renault has unveiled its newest design center in Chennai, marking a significant step in its ongoing investment in India. Spanning 1,500 square meters, the facility was established with an investment of €1.5 million (approximately ₹15 crore) and underscores the French automaker’s intention to strengthen its presence in the Indian market, where it aims to introduce five new products over the next two years.
The new center will not only focus on developing India-specific models but will also contribute to Renault’s global vehicle portfolio, with select international models to be designed at the Chennai hub.
Laurens van den Acker, Chief Design Officer of Renault Group, emphasized the strategic importance of the facility: “India is highly unique and locally driven. Having a dedicated design studio is essential to understanding its nuances, listening to its needs, and building from its strengths. The Renault Design Centre Chennai will focus on developing models and concepts tailored to the Indian market while contributing to Renault Group’s global projects. By leveraging local talents and insights, this center will play a key role in shaping Renault’s future mobility solutions. Its strategic location – at the heart of RNTBCI’s excellence hub – also enables closer collaboration across functions and faster integration of design into our engineering and innovation processes.”
Rethink Concept Makes Appearance – But Won’t See Production
At the launch event, Renault also showcased the Renault Rethink concept, a futuristic design sculpture with a form resembling an SUV and featuring multiple exterior screens, offering a glimpse into the brand’s forward-thinking design philosophy.
While visually striking and innovative, the Rethink is not slated for production. Renault has clarified that the concept is purely a design exploration, intended to inspire and showcase the company’s vision of future mobility, rather than preview an upcoming model.
With the opening of this Chennai-based design center, Renault aims to leverage local talent and consumer insights to accelerate innovation and deepen its engagement in India, while also influencing its global design direction.
